Water Parameters
Maintain consistent reef-safe levels:
- Temperature: 72–79°F (22–26°C)
- Salinity: 1.020–1.025
- pH: 8.1–8.4
- Ammonia/Nitrite: 0 ppm
- Nitrate: <20> They are sensitive to poor water quality, so regular maintenance is key.
Tank Setup
- Minimum Tank Size: 30 gallons for a single goby; larger tanks are better for pairs.
- Substrate: Fine live sand is essential for their sand-sifting behavior.
- Aquascape: Provide live rock and burrowing space. They dig and create tunnels, so secure rockwork is important.
- Lighting: Moderate; no special requirements.
- Flow: Gentle to moderate water movement.
Behavior & Compatibility
- Temperament: Peaceful. May be territorial with other gobies unless paired.
- Tank Mates: Compatible with other peaceful reef fish. Avoid aggressive species.
- Reef Safe: Yes. They do not harm corals or invertebrates.
Feeding
- Diet: Detritivore. In the wild, they sift sand for microfauna.
- In Captivity: Offer a varied diet of:
- Frozen mysis and brine shrimp
- Sinking pellets
- Enriched live foods
- Frequency: Feed 2–3 times daily. They have high metabolisms and need regular meals.
